Sourcing the Source

Sere Saba, Ethiopia

Since the construction of the first washing station in Sere Saba, our close partner and friend, Mr. Hagos and his family helped build the systems that makes Ethiopian coffee distribution possible, creating the foundation that connects farmers and their harvests to the rest of the world. Their work has played a meaningful role in improving the lives of farmers and local communities, and contributing to the growth and development of Ethiopia as a whole.

Mr. Hagos

Where it Started

When Mr. Hagos first began sourcing coffee from the region surrounding the river within a 60km radius, the area was heavily forested with little infrastructure. Farmers often traveled long distances by horse to deliver their coffee to market.

Infrastructure & Access

Understanding the importance of access and development, Mr. Hagos began constructing roads and bridges to connect the washing station with existing transportation routes. This transformed the local economy by allowing farmers and their families to move coffee more efficiently while also bringing vegetables and staple crops to market.

Education & Community

The impact reached far beyond coffee. Housing support, medical assistance, and educational opportunities followed. A school and a library were built beside the station and donated to the local administration, helping reduce child labor and early marriage while creating access to education for future generations.

Circular Value

Because coffee is often the primary annual income source for farming families, we work together to pay premium prices and provide financing before harvest, helping support farmers and their households throughout the year.

Yield & Quality

Partnering with Technoserve, training programs are provided to farmers on specialty coffee production, quality improvement, and the harvesting of red ripe cherries—improving both yield and cup quality.

Long-Term Impact

Together, we continue working alongside local governments through funding, infrastructure development, and community support initiatives to create long-term impact throughout the region.

Results

Infrastructure Built

Constructing vital roads and bridges within a 60km radius of the Sere Saba river to connect isolated farming communities to local and world markets.

Education Funded

Directly establishing and equipping a dedicated local school and library right beside the washing station to secure safe futures.

Economic Stability

Providing upfront pre-harvest financing and paying guaranteed fair prices to ensure stability for farming households.
